Internship positions 

The EFC is always looking for university students wishing to take a one-year break from their studies prior to their final year. Based in Brussels, Belgium this placement offers you the opportunity to live and work in the heart of Europe and provides you with essential employment skills. Internships generally start in the summer. 

  • All applications should be received before April of the year in which the internship will start.
  • Please note that there is only 1 vacancy under each position advertised. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted. Successful applicants will be notified at least 1 month prior to the start of their internship.
  • Please note: there is a trial period of 3 months.

Candidate requirements

The EFC is looking for enthusiastic, flexible interns for a period of one year (summer 2010 to summer 2011). Positions require a responsible individual who is outgoing, yet with a committed and sensible attitude towards work. Accommodation

The EFC does not provide accommodation. However, before you arrive in Brussels you will be provided with accommodation information, although residence in the city is relatively easy to arrange. The average price of accommodation for students and interns is approximately 300-500 euros per month (+one month guarantee). 

Stipend and benefits

For the 12-months period of your internship, the EFC covers:

  • A stipend of €700 per month
  • 300 travel allowance to return home
  • A language course with a limited cost decided by the EFC
  • 12 business days off
  • Work insurance
  • Bus/Metro pass within Brussels during your internship period
  • Internships are declared to the Belgian taxes. At the end of the internship each intern will receive a work attestation and a holidays attestation

Internships available, 2010-2011

Position 1: Information Technology Department Intern

The IT intern will carry out the following tasks. In addition to these, there is the possibility for the intern to get involved with projects which specifically interest them.

Assisting in the upkeep of the existing websites and creating new web pages

Assisting in the maintenance of the network and server, both hardware and software. Software used includes Symantec Backup Exec, Active Directory, IIS 6.0.

Management of email server and spam filter software (Microsoft Exchange and Postini).

Assisting in the maintenance of the databases (SQL server and Access)

Management of IT intern knowledge base.

Providing support/training to staff in the use of various applications (Microsoft Office 2007, Microsoft Sharepoint, Microsoft Dynamics CRM)

Providing support to staff members in the use of computers and software

Selection and purchase of new hardware, followed by installation and software customization.

The candidate should be an undergraduate or recent graduate with the following attributes:

Position 2: Benchmarking and Capacity-building Department Intern

The  Benchmarking and Capacity-building department deals with the professional training of European independent funders and civil society organisation staff. The intern will dedicate half of his/her work time to the International Fellowship Programme (IFP), a peer-learning European exchange programme for foundations and NGOs, and will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining contact with the Programme participants, host organisations and Steering Committee on project proposals, administration and deadlines;
  • Keeping an overview of the Programme budget and grants management;
  • Contributing to the organisation of the IFP final seminar.

The intern (after having receivd training) will also provide support to the Capacitiy Building Officer of EFC by contributing to:

  • Researching on capacity building;
  • Preparing documentation, dossiers and budget tables;
  • Updating website content;
  • Helping with training organisation (workshops, peer-learning events, professional exchange meetings and seminars);
  • Finalising grant and evalution reports.

The applicant should have the following attributes:

  • Enthusiastic and engaging
  • Capable of working well both independently and in a team
  • Able to deal with multiple priorities
  • Work well under pressure
  • Have excellent organisational skills
  • Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is a must

    EFC Interns 2009-2010

    Filled Internship Positions, 2009-2010

    Position 1: Membership & Grants Department Intern

    The Department's main activity is to identify potential members to join the EFC’s growing membership base. With the diversity of members, the department works to ensure that their needs and interests within the EFC’s range of activities and services are catered to. The department also runs the annual photo competition. Job tasks under this internship include:

    Assisting the Membership Officer in the development of an annual and long-term membership recruitment and retention strategy

    Assisting in work related to membership involvement

    Assisting in the organisation of meetings, including the preparation of dossiers and report writing

    Assisting in the organisation of the annual EFC Photo Competition

    Helping update the contact relational management database

    General administrative work

    Applicants should have a strong grasp of the English language, with all other languages considered as an asset. Good computer skills are essential (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, FrontPage, and eventually Publisher). The ideal candidate should have strong written and verbal communication skills. This position calls for a responsible person and a creative all-rounder.

    Position 2: Executive Office Intern

    The European Foundation Centre is looking for a high energy, dependable, organised, team-oriented person to support work in the Executive Office. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), this internship position will assist with day-to-day work by providing organisational support and administrative assistance for the development of the various Executive Office activities and initiatives. It is an excellent entry-level opportunity. Job tasks under this internship include:

    Assisting in the organisation and follow-up of internal and external meetings and events (e.g. management of logistics, background documentation, report writing)

    Respond to routine requests for information

    Perform other duties and coordinate special projects, as assigned

    Specific administrative support for the COO

    Screen phone calls and correspondence and ensure that the COO and other members of EFC staff are promptly advised of priority matters

    Prepare correspondence

    Maintain the COO’s calendar and schedule meetings on her behalf

    Make travel and meeting arrangements

    Create and maintain time and expense records, filing systems, mailing lists and other records, as needed.

    Position 3: EU Affairs Department Intern

    The European Affairs Department of the European Foundation Centre works to promote the development and activities of foundations in the EU, encourage better understanding of foundations, enhance their operating environment, and represent EFC member’s interest vis-à-vis EU institutions.

    Internship purpose: To assist the European Affairs department with some of the day to day work by providing organisational support and administrative assistance for the development of the department activities and initiatives, including the European Forum for Philanthropy and Research Funding.

    The intern will actively assist and participate in the following tasks:

    • Help develop and keep-up-to date web-based information and databases on European affairs (drafting pieces of news, entering data)
    • Assist with the development of a quarterly electronic newsletter on philanthropy and research funding
    • Assist in the organisation and follow-up of meetings, and large events (e.g. management of logistics, background documentation, report writing)
    • Conduct specific research in the areas of work of the department
    • Undertake administrative work relating to the activities of the department

    The successful applicant should:

    • Be an undergraduate student
    • Have very good organisational, communication and writing skills (essential)
    • Be fluent in English (knowledge of other European languages is an asset)
    • Have strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, data bases, webpage creation and publishing)
    • Be creative and enthusiastic
    • Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Have an interest in European affairs

    Position 4: Events Department Intern

    The events department centralises all logistical arrangements for EFC events within one team. The department supports EFC events and meeting organisation, collects knowledge in the area of event management and cooperates with program staff and other departments of the EFC to provide professional events. The events department is looking for an intern to help provide administrative support and assistance. Duties include but are not limited to:

    Processing registrations

    Preparing meeting materials

    Responding to information queries about various events

    Researching event venues

    Providing on-site support including registering attendees

    Supporting the two members of the events department

    While this position is primarily administrative based we are keen to involve the selected candidate in the planning and development stages of bringing together the various events, in particular the Centre’s annual conference. The applicant should have the following attributes:

    Excellent written and oral communication skills in English

    Proficiency in Microsoft office applications

    Enthusiastic and engaging

    Capable of working well both independently and in a team

    Able to deal with multiple priorities

    Position 5: Information & Communications Intern

    The Information & Communications Department aims to collect, manage and disseminate information on EFC member foundations as well as on the foundation and corporate funder community active in Europe.

    Job duties for this position include:

    • Assist with the drafting, editing and proofreading of news items for the EFC website, as well as publically-available documents and EFC publications;
    • Coordinate the formatting and sending of all the EFC e-newsletters and mass e-mails;
    • Assist with the maintenance of the EFC website (in particular the EFC press corner, financial crisis portal, and news and knowledge web pages) and with EFC social media channels (Twitter, Facebook);
    • Assist with the end-user development, in close collaboration with IT staff, of the Internet, Intranet (SharePoint) and the CRM (Customer Relationship Management software)  - the latter is used to for the management of all EFC information flows relating to events, communications, interest groups and membership activities;
    • Develop wikis and other training material and organise trainings to help staff make the best use of the CRM and SharePoint;
    • Assist staff when using the CRM/SharePoint in their day-to-day work and troubleshoot operational problems encountered;
    • Assist with responding to and recording internal and external information requests about EFC members and their activities, making use of the CRM information request system and other information materials;
    • Create profiles of new member foundations as they join the EFC, and enter them into the CRM;
    • Maintain and update current member profiles using websites, annual reports and other publicly available resources;
    • Maintain and update communications and press contact lists within the CRM;
    • Contribute to the development of conceptual documentation tools (data categorisation, classification and indexing system) for use within the CRM, intranet and website;
    • Additional administrative work, especially related to the dissemination and storage of EFC publications and the reception;
    • Assist EFC staff in the framework of EFC events such as the annual general assembly and conference.

    The candidate should be preferably a student with the following:

    • Excellent knowledge of English (knowledge of other European languages is a definite asset);
    • Education in the field of communications and/or knowledge management;
    • Interest in the non-profit sector;
    • Good analytical and organisational skills;
    • Ability to work as part of the team and autonomously;
    • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (knowledge of SharePoint and Microsoft Dynamics a plus);
    • Knowledge of graphic web design.
