Showcasing the diversity of work carried out by foundations in Europe is the aim of the Interactive Fair. Open to everyone throughout the Week, the Fair offers an opportunity to meet with staff from foundations and find out firsthand some of the exciting projects and programmes.

 

Darwin’s Evolution

Explore Darwin's Evolution exhibition, which commemorates the 200 years since Darwin’s birth, and 150 years since the publication “On the Origin of Species”. Hosted by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and curated by Professor José Feijó (University of Lisbon/Gulbenkian Science Institute), the exhibition takes you through key scientific and cultural milestones that were to shape Darwin’s theory of evolution and natural selection. Using a selection of interactive media and original artefacts, the exhibition provides a condensed version of a long story, which is expected to help visitors understand the main motivation behind Darwin’s intellectual endeavours, and the consequences for modern culture.

Council on Foundations (COF)

The Council on Foundations is a US non-profit membership association, which provides its members with services and support to help them succeed.  COF emphasises the value of philanthropy in the lives of people everywhere.  The stand offers information about the association and how to become a member.  

Fundação Eugénio de Almeida

The stand opens a window into Fundação Eugénio de Almeida, a Portuguese foundation that promotes the development and social cohesion of the Évora region in Portugal, through projects in the cultural, educational, social and economic fields. Included in the display are films, interactive information about ongoing projects - namely in volunteering - catalogues of art exhibitions and other publications, and an on-line inventory of artistic heritage. The stand also invites visitors to taste some of the wines and olive oils produced by the foundation, which are the basis of its economic self-sustainability. Learn more about the foundation, winner of the Social Innovation Award from the European EQUAL Initiative.

Next stop M9: A new museum for a new city

M9 is an urban regeneration project supported by Fondazione di Venezia in the heart of Mestre, a city of about 200,000 inhabitants on the Venetian mainland, where the most important economic and infrastructural changes in the North East of Italy are taking place. On a 9,000 sq. m area, the foundation aims to build a multifunctional centre in which modernity can be represented and studied. The centre is inspired by recent experiences that have seen cultural institutions as a lever for achieving civil, economic and social development, as a factor of community identification, and as a tool for intergenerational, ethnic and confessional integration. M9 will include a next-generation interactive museum dedicated to the momentous changes of the 20th century, areas reserved for temporary exhibitions, a media centre and an archive for study and research, an auditorium and spaces for didactic activities. In addition, the centre will provide services and have recreational and commercial areas.

Philanthropy for education

Fondazione Cariplo invites you to learn about its organisation, which focuses its efforts on improving the living conditions in its local community by furthering the common interest and the public good in arts and culture, education and scientific research, environment, healthcare and support to the disadvantaged.

Fondation Mérieux

Fondation Mérieux is working to strengthen collaboration and partnerships with international development and health organisations and authorities. Confident and committed, the foundation aims to undertake long-term actions and adopt a sustainable strategy in the fight against infectious diseases throughout the world.

Jacobs Foundation

Get the latest about the work of Jacobs Foundation in support of scientific projects and concrete social intervention programmes, which seek to help structure and support the development of children and youth. Aiming to achieve immediate, tangible results in the lives of young people, while at the same time affecting long-term changes in their communities, the foundation supports evidence-based projects around the world. And don’t forget to ask about Jacobs University Bremen, the establishment of which, in 2006, set a new benchmark for private funding in Europe.

Dialogue Audition

“The Dialogue Audition” is a performance act by visual artist and architect Filip Berte that will result in an interactive film to be edited and previewed at the conclusion of Foundation Week. “The Dialogue Audition” aims at questioning and bridging the existing communication gap between EU institutions and its citizens. Throughout Foundation Week, Berte will interview an array of people: policy-makers, conference participants, citizens and you. The performance is taking place in partnership with the European Cultural Foundation, in the framework of its New European Narratives discourse.

Microsoft EMEA

What are the possibilities for accomplishing e-Inclusion in Europe?  How can community technology strengthen social and economic progress?  Come and explore the work of two networks, Telecentre Europe and TechSoup Global, to learn about their work together with NGOs across Europe, enabling inclusive, appropriate use of technology in a scaled and sustainable way, in partnership with Microsoft and others.   Discover how to get 100,000 people on-line in one day.  Test drive innovative technology tools designed for working with particular populations confronting various challenges.  Explore how software and other technology donations are growing the capacity of NGOs all over Europe to more effectively serve the needs of at-risk communities.

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Belgian Fund for Food Security (BFFS)

Discover the IFAD and BFFS stand and find out more about this unique partnership. IFAD and BFFS's strengths create synergy and bring added value to the rural communities.  IFAD is dedicated to eradicating rural poverty in developing countries.  BFFS is a joint programme of IFAD with special focus on Africa. We plan to expand to new countries in Asia and Latin America. We welcome you to visit our stand and to learn more about IFAD and BFFS. Join us in the effort to fight rural poverty.

Fondazione CRT

The stand displays the experiences and expertise gained by Fondazione CRT through its projects focusing on young human resource development. Some of the foundation’s most successful projects are showcased, including: “Master dei Talenti”, which provides internships to qualified university graduates all over the world; “Mestieri Reali”, an educational project on restoration of historical and cultural sites; “Diderot”, a multi-faceted approach to learning for students  from 5 to 18 years old;  “Lagrange”, which finances international research on complexity sciences; and “C-Lab”, a virtual community that brings together current and past participants from the abovementioned projects.

A Reason in prison. Compagnia di San Paolo's commitment towards the prison system

The stand aims to check out the work carried out by Compagnia di San Paolo on the Italian prison system. In cooperation with public bodies and NGOs, the foundation supports training schemes and job-related workshops inside and outside the prison, with a view to helping inmates with their social and occupational rehabilitation. Some quotations of the inmates themselves highlight the main interventions of the Compagnia. Bier production and coffee toasting are two project presented in the stand with specific machinery.

A Youth Empowerment Partnership Programme (YEPP)

The stand is hosted by the one of the Compagnia di San Paolo since it is a supporter of the YEPP Programme. In 2011 YEPP turns 10! Since its inception in 2001, YEPP has implemented a “Concept of Change”, which brought together local actors in disadvantaged areas across Europe to work in a systematic way to tackle youth-related issues together with young people - not for them. The stand highlights how and why the YEPP concept works and present one of YEPP’s most successful projects, the EmpowerMediaNetwork (EMN), which uses digital media to make young people seen and their voices heard.

Wellcome Trust

The Wellcome Trust is a global charity dedicated to achieving extraordinary improvements in human and animal health. It supports the brightest minds in biomedical research and the medical humanities. Its breadth of support includes public engagement, education and the application of research to improve health. Visit the stand to discover more about the focus areas and challenges the Trust has set for 2010–20 and more about its exciting and engaging activities.

Defeating malaria together

The Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) stand aims to raise awareness on malaria, a preventable and treatable disease that continues to place a heavy burden on disease-endemic countries. The stand will highlight the importance of research and development of new and affordable anti-malarial tools that will contribute to the ultimate eradication of this disease.  As part of a pioneering PDP (product development partnership), MMV presents the ways in which the public, private and philanthropic sectors are successfully working together to develop new medicines to address this global problem. MMV, a not-for-profit public-private partnership, was established as a foundation in Switzerland in 1999. It is dedicated to reducing the burden of malaria in disease-endemic countries by discovering, developing and facilitating delivery of new, effective and affordable anti-malarial drugs.

Score a basket for disability mainstreaming!

The Fundación ONCE stand offers insight into how foundations can apply a disability lens to their activities with examples from member foundations of the EFC Consortium of Foundations on Human Rights and Disability that are using such a lens. Visitors also have the unique chance to shoot some hoops with CD Fundosa, a wheelchair basketball team ranked fourth in Europe. Give it a go!

Turkish Foundations’ Corner

Gain insight into the world of Turkish foundations and their various and growing roles in the social, economic and political life of their country. The stand, supported by the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV), provides a fresh perspective on Turkey by displaying the important roles Turkish Foundations and NGOs play in the country’s development, democratisation and European Union accession process. Displaying a rich selection of books, brochures, visuals and other materials, the stand showcases the richness and diversity of Turkish foundations today, while also providing a glimpse of their rich past.

Fondazioni4Africa

Discover the work of Fondazioni4Africa, an initiative that brings together for the first time four of Italy’s leading banking foundations: Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione Cariparma, Fondazione Cariplo and Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena. In close cooperation with Italian NGOs, associations of African migrants and the Fondazione Umano Progresso, Fondazioni4Africa has two main projects, in Northern Uganda and in Senegal. Visit a photography exhibition documenting the lives of a group of young people from Kalongo, a small village in Northern Uganda, severely affected by civil war. During the war, the village was transformed into a refugee camp which sheltered up to 60,000 displaced people. The photographs exhibited were taken by young people from the camp, who spent one month learning about photography journalism as a key means to describing the stories and the hopes of their people. The project was supported by Fondazioni4Africa, in conjunction with Amref, Cesvi and COOPI.

European Cultural Foundation

Find out more about some of the many inspiring artistic and cultural contributions made by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) to the European project, which challenge opinions about the EU construct and stimulate dialogue. Visitors are invited to take part in The Cloud, a guided tour to the historical museum of the future (31 May at 17:30 and 3 June 16:45); or to listen to an interview with curator Milica Pekić on The Culture Lobby (1 June 14:00). There are also plenty of opportunities to meet ECF staff and learn more about the foundation’s programmes, grants and advocacy work. By helping a diversity of creative voices to get heard, the foundation hopes to engage citizens of all generations and especially empower the next generation to help build Europe’s future together.
