How are foundations involved? Final report released!
In the framework of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All, the EFC has surveyed foundations' involvement and practices in the fields of equal opportunities and non-discrimination.
The final version of the EFC report "Advancing Equality: What can foundations do?" has been officially launched at the closing conference of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.
One hundred and ten case examples of foundations' actions reveal that their key objective when addressing equal opportunities and non-discrimination is to empower and increase participation by people who face discrimination. Discrimination based on race and ethnic origin receives by far the highest priority by foundations, followed by disability and gender.
This survey's findings, first released at the EFC Eurobriefing "Diversity is Our Strength" held on March 9th 2007 in Brussels, aimed to inform discussions on the role of foundations in the fields of equal opportunities and non-discrimination. The findings' preliminary conclusions also provided the basis for this meeting between foundation and European Commission representatives who sought to review EU priorities, financial means and implementation programmes and schemes, as well as exploring the potential for collaboration on equal opportunities and non-discrimination issues.

Overview – 2007 European Year
The European Commission has designated the year 2007 as the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.
The Year aims to:
- Stimulate debate and exchange of good practice
- Raise public awareness of citizens’ rights to non-discrimination and equal treatment
- Promote equal opportunities for all, which includes access to employment and education, and equal opportunities in the workplace and in the healthcare sector
- Celebrate diversity as an asset for the European Union
The Year will focus on the discrimination individuals or groups suffer owing to their race or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability. At both European and national levels, treatment of discrimination grounds should be balanced to ensure that most of the activities do not concentrate on a single or just a few grounds. The Year will also seek to address the issue of multiple discrimination.
