EFC is very pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010 EFC Photo competition "Working in partnership" is "Hero rats saving people's lives", submitted by King Baudouin Foundation.
Hero rats saving people's lives
Every hour someone in the world is hurt or killed by deadly landmines and there are more landmines in Africa than anywhere else. Apopo is a Tanzanian NGO that trains rats to detect landmines and screen for tuberculosis. “Hero rats” can sniff 40 sputum samples in seven minutes to detect tuberculosis, which is a full day’s work for a technician.
