Mission

The DIG is one of the oldest and most active of the EFC Interest Groups.  The EFC Disability Interest Group was initiated within the framework of the EFC - Fundación ONCE project “Partnership for Vocational Training and Employment for People with Disabilities in Europe”. The DIG aims to promote synergies between funders and serve as a hub for knowledge exchange amongst EFC members working on disability issues.

Objectives

  • Share and build knowledge on funding in the field of disability. 
  • Build capacity of foundations working on disability.
  • Mainstream disability within Foundations’ work and programmes.
  • Provide strategic input to the European Disability policy agenda. 
  • Be an innovation incubator for Foundations developing pilot projects that can be scaled up or replicated.

Activities

  1. European Consortium on Human Rights and Disabilities: It was launched in April 2009 to ensure a distinctive contribution from the Foundation sector in promoting the ratification and implementation of the ground-breaking UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.   
  2. League of Historical and Accessible Cities Project (2010): It aims to improve the accessibility of historical towns and promote sustainable tourism development through a pilot project implemented by a group of foundations in partnership with the respective local authorities.
  3. Coordination of the Disability Working Group of the Social Economy Europe. This group aims at raising awareness and promoting the consideration and integration of people with disabilities, and disability issues, among society as a whole and in particular within Social Economy enterprises and organisations.

  6. Providing information, gather and analyze members requests and exchange of best practices: seasonal newsletter, website contents...
  7. Publications: The first phase focused on information gathering and analysis, mapping funding in the field, identifying cases of best practice, and convening funders for sharing knowledge and experience, where the three major results of this phase were the following: 
  8. A Eurobriefing on Vocational Training and Employment for People with Disabilities in 2003. This one-day information meeting on disability issues convened major European foundations and corporate funders active in the field, as well as European Commission representatives and other stakeholders such as the EDF. The objective was to exchange information on practices and policies in order to find possible ground for cooperation towards the European Year of People with Disabilities 2003.
