Global Philanthropy Leadership Initiative

  GLOBAL PHILANTHROPY LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (GPLI)

The Global Philanthropy Leadership Initiative (GPLI) is a joint initiative of EFC, Council on Foundations andWorldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support (WINGS). It is co-chaired by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, with a Task Force comprised of 30+ philanthropic leaders.

GPLI’s purpose is to develop new ways to advance the practice and impact of philanthropy at the global level. More specifically, GPLI is focused on catalysing and convening collaborative action in three priority areas:

1. Improving the legal and regulatory environment for philanthropy in a global context;

2. Developing models for improving and increasing collaboration in philanthropy in a global context;

3. Identifying key opportunities to engage with policy makers/multi-lateral organizations.

Currently in the middle of its two-year mandate, initiatives emerging from GPLI include:

  • An Index on Cross-Border Giving, which will rank countries on the ease of their legal and fiscal requirements for both the giving and receiving of cross-border funds – a pilot is expected by May/June 2012
  • A paper on the ideal environment for cross-border giving, which informs the Index
  • A framework to encourage more strategic engagement between foundations and multilateral organizations
  • Two global-scale collaborations, one on sustainable cities and urban futures, the other on strengthening the capacity of civil society towards peaceful transitions in the countries of the Arab region
  • An update the Principles of Accountability for International Philanthropy, with a view to deepening understanding and practice of accountability when working internationally, and to introduce voices and perspectives from the global south

There will be sessions about GPLI at the annual conferences of both EFC and the Council. The GPLI Task Force will next meet again in June 2012. At that point the various initiatives will be launched into the broader philanthropic community, to be further developed and put into action by interested foundations.
