Long-term Roles for European Foundations in Addressing Global Issues

This paper proposes a role for European foundations in addressing global issues. It urges that foundations realise their full potential as catalysts for change, build on their innate strengths and unique characteristics, and firmly situate their work in the context of a global agenda. The paper reflects key ideas emerging out of a roundtable of global philanthropic leaders, held in January 2006, and a series of consultations with EFC members and partner organisations in Europe and beyond.

Principles of Accountability in International Philanthropy

Developed by a Joint Working Group of the EFC and US Council on Foundations (COF), the Principles and accompanying Practices aim to guide and support funders in making better decisions in pursuing their international missions and objectives, and to provide a framework that will encourage and assist more foundations to get involved internationally.

The Group drew up seven core principles to guide foundations in their cross-border work. They cover the following areas: integrity, understanding, respect, responsiveness, fairness; cooperation and collaboration; and effectiveness.

The Principles are voluntary and aspirational. They seek to address a specific niche and complement activities undertaken in Europe and the United States that deal with broader issues of accountability, effectiveness and good practice.

Disaster Response Initiative

A joint project of the EFC and the US Council on Foundations (COF), the disaster response initiative sought to develop a set of principles and practical tips to guide and inform foundations and corporate grantmakers interested in becoming more effective and strategic in their responses to disasters. This revised edition contains updated facts and figures, examples, and resources.
