(11/03/2010 )

A  European Foundation Centre (EFC) Forum for Roma Inclusion Workshop took place on 4 and 5 March 2010 in The Hague, hosted by the Bernard van Leer Foundation.

The focus of the workshop was on early childhood development within the Roma communities. The goals were to share best practice and agree on a series of policy guidelines that will be presented at the Second European Roma Summit, which will take place on 8-9 April in Córdoba, as one of the key events of the Spanish Presidency of the EU.

Workshop participants included Roma representatives, European foundations and European networks of early childhood development specialists. The workshop explored elements of best practice in service delivery, successful community based approaches for the healthy development of young children, barriers to Roma children realizing their rights - including prejudice and discrimination, and the interface between EU directives on Roma Inclusion and municipal authorities capacity to implement quality early learning programs.

Reports from this workshop will be made available through EFC and the Bernard van Leer Foundation over the course of 2010.
