On 9 March 2010 the European Commission released a strategy to help maintain the momentum of global efforts to tackle climate change following the Copenhagen conference in December 2009.
The policy proposal 'International climate policy post-Copenhagen: Acting now to reinvigorate global action on climate change' takes stock of some lessons after the Copenhagen Conference, which the Commission considers fell short of initial ambitions, but nevertheless showed the substantial and widespread support to step-up efforts to address climate change. It also maps out the steps going forward in the near- and medium-terms, and signals the Commission's determination to continue its efforts to ensure adequate action is taken globally in keeping with the seriousness of the global challenge confronting the EU.
The Commission considers that the EU should in parallel:
- Swiftly begin implementing last December's Copenhagen Accord, in particular 'fast start' financial assistance to developing countries.
- Continue to press for a robust and legally binding global agreement that involves all countries in real climate action.
