Starting today, more than 1,000 representatives from foundations, non-profits and the EU Institutions, as well as members of the public, will come together in Brussels for the first-ever Foundation Week. Over the course of the next five days, participants will immerse themselves in debates and exhibitions on the work that foundations do to tackle the pressing social issues facing Europe and the world today. The first part of the week - the Open Days – offers free admission to some 60 sessions, 20 stands, and more than 100 films which showcase the work of foundations.
The European foundation sector makes an impact on social change, delivering vital services to millions of Europeans every day. It is estimated that there are some 110,000 foundations in Europe, collectively spending between 83 and 150 billion Euros annually on projects and programmes, and providing employment for to up to 1 million Europeans.
“Foundations make a vital contribution to society, providing crucial support to millions of Europeans,” says Dr Gerry Salole, Chief Executive of the EFC. “The impact they have on so many areas is phenomenal and I hope that through Foundation Week we can showcase some of their work.”
