(09/08/2010 )

There is currently no publically available information on the total number of foundations in Portugal, what they do or how much money they receive from the State, according to a news article in the Portuguese daily newspaper, Público. In 2009 the Inspectorate General of Finance (IGF) identified 306 charitable foundations that benefited from 166.5 million euros, however the IGF say that they are unable to specify the total number of foundations currently operating in Portugal and the amount of subsidies granted by various ministries to these organisations. Meanwhile the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) say it knows the size of the sector but has yet to make this publically available.
