The report of all the work undertaken within the context of the FOREMAP project is now available for download.
With the FOREMAP project, the EFC has developed a mapping methodology and tools to gather qualitative and quantitative information on the contribution of foundations to research. These tools were then tested in four EU Countries namely Germany, Portugal, Slovakia and Sweden. The countries were chosen to represent the diversity of research and philanthropic sectors found in Europe.
The report provides an overview of the methodology and tools that where developed for mapping European research foundations as well as an exploratory overview of research foundations in the 4 pilot countries and the experience in mapping research foundations in the countries.

112 research funding foundations representing assets of some €32 billion and €1.1 billion spending on research were surveyed in the four pilot study countries. The EFC relied on the expertise of local partners to undertake the pilot country surveys. They were: the Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen (German Association of Foundations), the Catholic University of Porto, the Stockholm School of Economics and the Slovak Donors’ Forum.
What next?
The next step will now be to extend the mapping to the remainder of the European Union. The EFC is working with its partners to encourage similar exercises in the EU27. France and Spain are likely to be the first countries where national mappings undertaken and funded nationally will be run based on the FORMAP methodology.
This will not only provide foundations and national research stakeholders with a better understanding of the role and practices of foundations supporting research in the countries concerned, but the data collected based on the FOREMAP approach will enable comparisons to be drawn with the countries already document in the pilot phase.
