Report from peace and security policy briefing now available

The European Foundation Centre (EFC) and the US-based Peace and Security
Funders Group jointly hosted a two-day policy briefing on peace and security issues for more than 50 European and North American funders during the EFC’s Foundation Week in June 2010. The event was organised with the support of the Berghof Foundation for Confict Studies, Fondation Charles Leopold Mayer, Forum for a New World Governance and the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.

The programme featured a dinner address by Robert Cooper, Director General for External Affairs and Political-Military, Affairs at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, a keynote address by Louise Arbour, President and CEO of the International Crisis Group.

Ivan Vejvoda, Balkan Trust for Democracy, and Heather Grabbe, Open Society Institute - Brussels, shared lessons from the Balkans; Amb. Francesc Vendrell, former EU Representative to Afghanistan, and Clare Lockhart, Institute for State Effectiveness, provided a dose of reality and wisdom about the situation in Afghanistan; and Gerard Chaliand, expert in geopolitics and armed conflict studies, gave a perspective on the changing geopolitics in a multi-polar world.

The reception featured Colombian artist and peace activist Juanes, who spoke about his work on children in conflict.
