The Commission is currently working towards a paper addressing the issue of improving good governance in the tax area in developing countries. In this context of increasing interest in tax matters in development cooperation, the European Parliament and the European Commission organised a conference to analyse the link between taxation and development and the impact of harmful tax practices on developing countries on 9 December in Brussels.

The event discussed possible policy measures to increase tax revenues in developing countries, and to develop a fairer and more cooperative international tax environment.

The conference, organised by Karel De Gucht, EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, László Kovács, EU Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union and Eva Joly, President of the Development Committee at the European Parliament, gathered renowned experts, politicians and representatives from the civil society to discuss possible policy measures to increase tax revenues in developing countries, and to develop a fairer and more cooperative international tax environment.
