The US Giving Pledge has sparked interest among the media in European philanthropists and foundations, and on whether there is a cultural acceptance and momentum for similar initiative in Europe.

In Austria, the media's focus was timely as at the same time six foundations came together to set up a joint initiative, entitled "We work for society", which seeks to show that philanthropy exists in Austria and how it is positively contributing to society. The foundations involved in the initiative include ERSTE Stiftung (EFC member), Essl Foundation, Rudolf Humer Privatstiftung, Schweighofer Privatstiftung, Katharina Turnauer Privatstiftung, Unruhe Privatstiftung.
