By providing an overview of the current situation of the foundation sector in Europe, the two authors reiterate the need for a European Foundation Statute to enable foundations to successfully operate across borders. With the Europe 2020 strategy in action, foundations will have to face more challenges ahead to encourage smarter, greener, more sustainable and inclusive growth and more participatory and cohesive multicultural societies in Europe.
