The Stavros Niarchos Foundation has announced an emergency relief grant of €250,000 to Oxfam to help address some of the critical needs of the inhabitants of Ethiopia’s most drought-stricken areas.
The grant will support efforts on territories that are classified as “Priority One” hotspots by both the UN and the Ethiopian government, including the Sitti Zone of the Somali region, the Afar region and the West Arsi zone of the Oromia region.
The devastating drought, exacerbated by El Nino, has had a dramatic impact on the lives of over 10 million Ethiopians. Crops are failing, water sources are drying up and livestock are dying. The grant will help Oxfam provide emergency food and water, through water trucking and the rehabilitation of boreholes, to the most vulnerable families.
