BackgroundThe EDP foundation is a private, non-profit making institution and was set up by EDP -Energias de Portugal, S.A. in December 2004. The foundation has reinforced the EDP Group's commintment to solidarity that it has followed since it was set up and reflects a concern for asserting its modernity and supporting important causes in Portugal.
Mission• To foster knowledge of science and technology in the areas of energy and the environment, preserving their historical heritage • To sponsor and promote initiatives that help to strengthen the three dimensions of sustainable development - environment, economic and social • To promote access to culture in general and the arts in particular • To ensure greater insertion of the EDP Group in the community

Programme areasThe foundation's main areas of activity are:
• The Electricity Museum
• The Study Centre (Energy and Environment)
• The Documentation Centre
• Arts and culture
• Sustainability Programmes
The foundation also aims to convert the campus at the Tejo Power Station into a scientific and cultural unit, placing a well-located area in Lisbon at the dosposal of the artistic, scientific, cultural and education communities and of the general public as well.
