SUMMARY:Webinar on ''Philanthropy’s Role in Implementing the UN Global Compact on Refugees''
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe EFC’s Diversity\, Migration and Integration (DMI) network is organising a 60-minute webinar on “Philanthropy’s Role in Implementing the UN Global Compact on Refugees” on 30 April from 15:00 to 16:00 CET. \nAn increase in the number of people seeking asylum in recent years has exposed the ill-preparedness of the international community to deal with the challenge of dealing with refugees and asylum seekers\, further compounded by the uneven distribution of refugees across countries and regions. To address these issues\, The Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) was adopted in December 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly as an expression of political will of member states to save lives\, protect rights and share responsibilities. \nIn order for the compact to be implemented effectively there is a need for international multi-sectoral cooperation. Several CSOs have already launched initiatives to engage in the practical application of the GCR\, and a number of philanthropic actors have been funding these interventions. In this webinar\, we will discuss how philanthropic actors can take a more strategic and sustained role in supporting the implementation of the GCR and the webinar will also provide an update on the implementation of the GCR so as to inform private funders’ grantmaking decisions. \nThe webinar will address the following questions: \n\nWhat are the differences between the UN Global Compact on Refugees and the UN Global Compact on Migrants (GCM)? What do they entail? \nHow can GCR improve the challenges that refugees and hosting communities face every day?\nHow is the GCR being implemented?\nHow can we take a multi-stakeholder approach to the challenge of forced displacement to improve the lives of millions of people?\nHow have philanthropic actors been supporting implementation of the GCR and what additional role can they play?\n\nThe speakers include: \n\nJosephine Liebl\, Head of International Advocacy at the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE)\nJohannes Tarvainen\, educational officer at the UNHCR \nSahar Yadegari\, Chair of the European Programme for Integration and Migration (EPIM)\n\nTo register click here. \nFor more information on the webinar or the work of the DMI network contact Sevda Kilicalp. \n

SUMMARY:African Philanthropy Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The EFC is co-organising a meeting between African philanthropic organisations\, and EFC members active in Africa\, so as to better understand the landscape of African philanthropy\, on 21 May\, Paris. \nThis one day meeting just prior to the EFC Annual Conference will bring together these different players with the aim of better understanding the landscape of African philanthropy: what do the diverse forms look like; where do they sit; and what are the relationships that exist between them? Additionally\, where are there potential tensions that might pull the field in different directions? Can we work more collaboratively to counter some of these? Finally\, how are African infrastructure\, or support\, organisations nurturing this space? \nPlease note this event is by invitation only. \nFor more information please contact Jennifer Fitzsimons.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:EFC AGA and Conference 2019: Liberté\, égalité\, philanthropie
DESCRIPTION:  \nVisit the 2019 Conference website for programme and registration\nThe 2019 EFC AGA and Conference will take place from 22-24 May in Paris\, under the title “Liberté\, égalité\, philanthropie” \n“Liberté\, égalité\, fraternité!”: who isn’t familiar with the French national motto which finds its roots in the Revolution of 1789 but is still considered the rallying call for freedom\, equality and solidarity around the world today? \nYet despite their universal nature and appeal\, these three ideals are not (yet) fully realised: they continue to represent aims rather than achievements due to an array of critical and constantly evolving challenges. \nBearing this in mind: \n\nHow can European foundations respond to the migration crisis as a challenge to freedom of movement and an indicator of global inequalities?\nHow do we address the threats to freedom of speech and freedom of the press in an age of fake news and post-truth politics?\nThirty years after the fall of the Iron Curtain\, how can foundations promote human rights in Europe?\nHow can foundations encourage new forms of solidarity and inclusion?\n\nThese are just a few of the questions facing European foundations – and this is where you come in. We want to hear your brightest and best session proposals to identify ways in which philanthropy can help turn the dream of a free\, democratic and equitable society into a tangible reality. \n  \nFor more information please contact Andrea Salvadori. \n \n  \nThe EFC AGA and Annual Conference is fundamental part of the EFC’s commitment to improving peer-learning and collaboration among its members. For more information on the EFC’s seven key priorities\, please download the EFC Strategic Framework 2016-2022.  \n

SUMMARY:Funders' Forum on Sustainable Cities site visit to ZAC Pajol Éco-Quartier
DESCRIPTION: \nThe Funders’ Forum on Sustainable Cities (FFSC) will host a site visit to the ZAC Pajol Éco-Quartier\, Paris on the 24th May following the end of the EFC AGA and Conference. \nZAC Pajol is an ecological development zone located in the northeast of Paris\, bordered by many important railways that were developed throughout the 19th century\, and this history is still central to the site. The district fell into serious disrepair and decline during the 20th century and was considered wasteland\, to the point that the area was earmarked for demolition. However after pressure from local citizens the Deputy Major decided to completely rethink the project. \nThis new rehabilitation initiative has become a stunning example of a successful city redevelopment project and has managed to incorporate amenities such as a youth hostel\, library\, public gardens and various other spaces such as artistic workspaces\, urban farming\, and workspaces for local entrepreneurs. The project has achieved this while also preserving key elements of the 19th century industrial heritage such as the architecture and buildings\, while maintaining a small ecological footprint. \nThe FFSC site visit will provide participants with the opportunity to explore this initiative in detail\, speak to both officials from the municipality and the developers\, and find out about the campaign from the local community leaders who fought to maintain their input in the development. Participants will also get a chance to tour the facilities and speak to local users about both the development process and the opportunities that the initiative has brought to the district. \nParticipants will depart from the Paris Marriott Rive Gauche Hotel & Conference Centre following the EFC AGA and Conference. \nTo register for this event\, please contact Jennifer Fitzsimons. \n  \nImage courtesy of Lionel Allorge — Travail personnel\, CC BY-SA 3.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=50654121  \n
