LSE was founded in 1895 to create and share knowledge addressing major social challenges and to shape a better world. The School works through research, education, creative intellectual debate and public engagement. The LSE has recently brought to life the Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship. The Institute has been created by Hughes-Hallett and Paul Marshall ant it focuses on the transformative impact of private philanthropic action.
