The National Museum of Wales is a national body with a distinctive formal role and responsibilities. It is a charitable body (Registered Charity number 525774) established by Royal Charter and sponsored by the Welsh Government, an organisation engaged (inter alia) in the carrying out of research or other academic, educational, scientific or cultural activities in its own right and also through co-operation with other organisations, including educational and research organisations.AC-NMW is recognised as an Independent Research Organisation (IRO) by the Natural Environment Research Council and by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Mission

AC-NMW’s purpose is: ‘inspiring people through our museums and collections to find a sense of well-being and identity, to discover, enjoy and learn bilingually, and to understand Wales’ place in the wider world’ (encapsulated in ‘inspiring people, changing lives’).

Programme Areas

Collecting the arts, sciences and history of Wales, and material relating to its relationship with the rest of the world. Researching and conserving these collections, and interpreting and exhibiting these for purposes of public learning and engagement. Changing the opportunities and life chances of children, adults and communities through cultural participation.
