Special Rapporteur Maina Kiai has announced the release of a factsheet summarising his latest report to the UN General Assembly. The report, which is scheduled to be presented in late October 2015, is a comparative study of enabling environments for associations and businesses, examining how and why States treat each sector differently. The Special Rapporteur asserts that businesses generally operate in better environments, largely because States, multilateral organisations and other key actors make great efforts to create such environments, whereas those actors often make comparatively little effort to improve the environment for associations.
The report comes after an open call over the summer from NPOs to contribute. Following this, the EFC within the FATF project NPO coalition submitted some comments to Maina Kiai, as the report explores sectorial equity issues tied to our ‘shrinking space’ agenda.
